After being out of work for a long time, it's helped rebuild my confidence.
Volunteering has helped me reconnect with people, regain a sense of purpose, and grow personally while contributing to something meaningful. What I enjoy most is knowing even small acts of support can make a real difference in someone’s life.
The greatest benefit of volunteering at Citizens Advice is the way it empowers people, including the volunteers themselves. The role improved my confidence, communication skills, and understanding of local services, providing a sense of belonging at a time when I needed it most.
To anyone considering volunteering, I would say go for it. You never know where the experience might lead, who you might inspire, or how much it could positively shape your future.

I've gained lived experience of my community.
I was entering my final year of my undergraduate at university when I decided to join Citizens Advice. I was looking to gain valuable experience and seeking a career in politics and public service, there was no better choice than Citizens Advice.
Things I’ve gained so far: first, grounded, realistic lived experience of my community. Secondly, fantastic experience of working in a professional sector. Lastly, I’ve learned an immense amount about the UK’s entire system, from laws to rights and welfare.

I volunteer because it gives me purpose.
When I first volunteered it was because I'd moved into a new area and had time to spare. I continue to volunteer because I feel I'm making a difference to others and for myself.
I enjoy interacting with the public and providing respect and care as a receptionist as people try to find solutions. It's enormously rewarding to use skills from my career while increasing my knowledge about the many areas we provide advice on.
I've made new social contacts and feel established in my community. I would recommend volunteering for Citizens Advice - it's a friendly organisation with lots of training so you never feel out of your depth.
